Remuneration for consumer representatives: PWD hopes that organisations will demonstrate their commitment to consumer representation by meeting the expenses incurred by consumer representatives and remunerating them for their time (see the draft Principles for the Appointment of Consumer Representatives: A Process for Governments and Industry, Commonwealth Treasury Consumer Affairs Advisory Council, May 2002). This recognizes that most other members of a committee will be paid for their time through their professional body or salaried employment. Consumers, however, frequently forgo paid work in order to prepare for and attend meetings or may be living on a low income such as a pension. PWD does not wish to put its consumer representatives in a position where they will be financially disadvantaged by their desire to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
